Electric Guitar Writing for Composers
Introduction
Concert Electric guitar composition is a specialised field within contemporary art music, requiring a distinct approach to instrumental writing, notation, and sound production.
Unlike traditional acoustic instruments, the electric guitar operates through a system that includes amplification, signal processing, and performer–technology interaction. As a result, composing for the instrument involves not only pitch and rhythm, but also timbre, texture, and the control of electronic devices such as pedals and amplifiers.
A central challenge in electric guitar composition lies in the integration of these elements into a coherent musical language. Techniques such as harmonics, distortion, feedback, and extended playing methods expand the sonic possibilities of the instrument, but also require precise notation and clear compositional strategies.
This project explores these issues by proposing a structured approach to writing for the electric guitar, combining theoretical reflection with practical applications. Through a series of compositions, technical studies, and a dedicated handbook, the research outlines a framework for understanding the instrument as a compositional medium within contemporary art music.
